it's not that simple. This started with french revolution and peasants started identifying with their ethnicities. National movements were a thing already at the end of Russian Empire, some of them created countries after it fell. Here in Lithuania, many of the nationalists were also socialists or commies because they believed that the country needs to be owned by the ethnicity as a whole not by one class of people. Those people lost to the capitalists and autocrats and then they were put in prisons or exiled. Those commie nationalists then allied with USSR later on, seeing Poland as the main threat to Lithuania's survival.
