You don't really understand that capturing territory was not the main aim of this war for Russia (beyond land bridge to Crimea, which was a strategic objective, and which Russia secured successfully). The main aim of the war is that Ukraine ceases to be a strategic threat to Russia. So far:
-Ukraine lost more than a million KIA, AWOL and gravely wounded, destorying its army and permanently damaging morale
-Pretty much all old Warsaw Pact hardware worldwide got destroyed along with what Ukraine had at the beginning of the war
-Ukraine's economy is irrepairably damaged
-Ukraine's demography is irrepairably damaged
You miss that in the war of attrition the losing side may get fucked well before it retreats from territories. See WW1 Germany, which capitulated in 1918 when Antanta didn't even enter Germany proper - it's generals just knew it was fucked. There is another reason why Russia is in no rush to capture big cities like Kharkiv or Sumy, because all it does is Russia gets hundreds of thousands to million+ disloyal civilians that have to be fed using military logistics. That's not exactly exciting proposition for Russian economy.
