in the book Earth Abides, the author George Stewart talks about this very concept. it is a post apocalyptic story but doesnt follow the usual tropes of sudden collapse (it doesnt follow tropes because it is one of the first books in such a genre, but thats a different discussion). instead, in the book, the main character observes how despite all of humanity dying off, machines, factories, systems, even the changing of street lights still operated as normal without human input. the main character marvels at how elegant these systems are and how integrated they were into society. one particularly humorous part of the book was even though he saw that there were no people and no society and thus no law, he still stopped at the stop lights (which still worked) and still found himself obeying laws (a testament to the innate virtue and civic mindedness within him) and didnt immediately descend into lawlessness
