Yes, splitting rent sounds cheap on paper. That's why I *tried* it in the first place. But in reality you quickly realize how shitty it is. You deal with roommates failing to come up with their portion of the rent, on top of the damage they cause nullifying your security deposit, late nights partying, doing drugs, bringing other retards over, getting tired of having them around, etc. It actually becomes more expensive to deal with their bullshit and you always get more than you bargain for

Realistically where I am housing taxes are 7,000 per year for a house that's only 150k, our neighbors pay much more than that.
Add in utilities and food and you exceed that per year probably.
Add in 1-2% value of the house per year for repairs / maintenance / "upgrades" that over time basically become mandatory - things in the house don't last forever.
Houses are expensive and you're talking over 10k per year for one even after the mortgage is paid off. Even in a family house the burden should be shared - the point of a family isn't actually just to jew each other really hard and pass all of the work off onto one guy who's willing to pay.
