The Indus Valley was conquered by the Mongol Empire of the Bronze Age (Indo-Europeans). Caste systems were popular in that era, and it was defined in that era as a means to separate the rulers from the ruled. The caste system wasn't that strict until Buddhism almost caused the extinction of Hinduism. Modern India still follows what is essentially a strict fundamentalism created to combat Buddhism.
