Yes I believe in most of the world the cheapest sweetener is sucrose from sugar cane but in the US there are tariffs against imported sugar with the intent of making Corn Syrup the cheapest sweetener since the US is the largest producer of corn. But recent publicity about HFCS has made Mexican coke easily available in most supermarkets, its cost more though.

I got a water carbonator, it was only like $30. Gas cylinders are $20 and one will do 80L of water, that's $0.25 a liter. And once you own the cylinder you can do an exchange and get it filled for $6 making it seven and a half cents per liter.

I bought some fancy Portland Syrups real Kola syrup and it's pretty good. You have to use about 2 ounces per liter, and the bottle was $10. That's $2 per liter, which makes it more expensive than normal store cola.

So I bought a one pound bag of ground Kola nuts and gathered the other necessaries like lemon peel, ginger, nutmeg, clove, allspice, and vanilla and I'm going to ferment this up and then strain it and bottle it and see if I can make a good home made cola. The recipe I've seen for a pound of kola will make a gallon of syrup. I'll report back with my results on /ck/.

Ww2, unironically. After ww2 and during the baby boomer boom, the US needed to grow more food, so they subsidized corn and wheat production. Once the boom started dying down, we had excess wheat and corn

But what does one do in this scenario? The obvious answer is to stop subsidizing it, however the farmers would revolt. Its like government handouts: once you give them free money, you cant take it away.

So, now what do we do? Find new uses for it, IE sugar and ethanol. Its just kicking the can down the road, leaving the problem for our generation

It's a waste product of the US food safety policies. US food production is poorly plannable, because they have no domes and no weather control systems.
