To me if I had to guess the Indian piece was just cast and not forged, like a mild carbon steel, whereas the other three were forged but the Chinese steel was brittle or had a casting or forging flaw. I would guess the Russian and American anvils were both cut from a forged steel billet.

>>Russian and American = tied for best place

The american anvil survived the 100 ton press with zero plastic deformation. The russian had some plastic deformation. So:

1st place America
2nd place Russia
3rd place China
4th place India

However, the american anvil was rusty and clearly not made in the last 40 years. So it is a legacy anvil, lost technology that cannot be made any more.

Very interesting
Indian anvil seems to be cast iron or a low melting temp castable metal.
Chinese anvil seems to be cast steel
Russian anvil seems to be one of the best overall
Burger anvil was the "best" overall but it
looks like it was decades old (notice that all of the above were brand new). Such manufacturing is impossible in jewsa now.
In short, buy russian anvils. At least they are making them.
Kraut anvils are the actual best anvils but they have not many new anvils in so many times they cost a fortune, so nobody would dare to try to break them for their cost.

Slightly disappointed in the scale but it's very cute.
Note that the US babby anvil flexed and returned to position on the 100t press. In a full-sized anvil, that means that every hammerblow has just the slightest amount of cushion. The two horns on either end make it much more functional.

As much as I love to 'murica flex, how much does this really matter? An anvil just needs to be a solid backstop that will stay rigid against a hammer.

If it can handle a single ton, it's probably fit for purpose.

It matters for big anvils, as the better quality they are, the more bounce you get, and the less force is needed to lift the hammer for another stroke.

Just keep the surface rust clean. That means it has a lot of carbon, which is why it's so hard. The others were cast iron. The American one is solid steel. Therefore, the American one, as long as it's kept fairly clean, will literally blast your lifetime. Unless it's lost, stolen or sold, you'll have that one until the day you die. You can then pass it on to your offspring.

The Russian anvil broke under the 500 ton press. The US anvil was smashed down a bit, but not broken. If you're a black smith hammering away all day, then the Russian one would eventually break because it's made out of cast iron. The American one is solid steel. There genuinely is a huge difference. Cast works well for certain things, like pans, but doesn't work well for an anvil.

These are probably shitty jewelry anvils, they're probably just for working really soft metals, they're all probably fine for that if you're working silver, gold, etc (with the exception of India possibly). Chinese one had a brittle 45 degree compressive shear failure though, that was cool.
Anonymous (ID: 4T2JX1J5) United States No.512992051
>>512991440
This is a fucking jewelry anvil bro. Also the only one that was likely cast was the Chinese one unless the others were annealed. The other thing about deformation is that it's not only a function of the material but also the design of the anvil. you can have 2 made of the same material but one will yield first due to design. Either way you don't need one of these to withstand such high force, what is preferable is probably just hardness without chipping, cracking or fracture in use or from being struck

>As much as I love to 'murica flex, how much does this really matter?
It's a demonstration of mentality.
The American, Russian, and Chinese anvils are all toys, but they are made to the standard of actual full size anvils.

The Indian one is just a toy. It is an anvil shaped object but beyond that is a piece of shit made of the lowest quality metal made with no heat treatment or expectation that it would ever be used by an intellectually curious young mind, and if by some chance it did happen to be put to the test by an ambitious child, well the anvil maker made his money and that's all that matters. Pure scam culture. Arguably the Chinese one also demonstrates some traits of scam culture as well since it's built to a lower standard than the American and Russian anvils, but that's probably more corner cutting and the expectation that a child doesn't actually need a fully capable iron than anything else.

Hardened, strong steel exists. It's an exact science. It's just cost optimization. For example, you can find a used trackhoe (with some repairs needed) sometimes for cheaper than a brand new large bucket that you attach to it (because the bucket and teeth are extremely tough steel)

You don't actually want to harden the entire thing, you want hardened work surfaces but ductility in the rest of it. The other problem with the Chinese one is that the neck was slim, which is not a good combination because strikes off center can stress it. It was probably like that because they cast the entire thing.

Well the Russian one was apparently a children's toy from USSR. And Anvils are sized for the work they are doing. I suspect the Indian one was a jewelers anvil which is why it's so soft in order not to scratch precious metals. silver and gold are very easy to scratch.

As for the US and China anvil they are likely bench anvils to work on fine and small hard metal work of some sort. Likely to hand craft iron or steel decorations, locks, metal tool making or similar sized hard metal crafting.
