pokemon catastrophe in Japan
McDonalds Japan decided for one week to sell Happy Meal childs meal that comes with a pack of Pokemon cards

Can yu guess what happened? People buy ten happy meals and get ten packs of cards.
Then they threw away maybe half of the hamburgers without eating it.

A Japanese crow in the yard of the McDonalds had the best time of its life scraping thrown full sized hamburgers out from trash bin.

https://www.hs.fi/maailma/art-2000011426655.html

Why did they sell so well? Because the meal + pokemon pack was cheaper than pokemon card pack itself is at the pokemon store. Pokemon manufacturer had a special deal with McDonalds that lasted for one week.

Later on McDonalds say they are sad that so much food went to waste. Pokemon makers on the other hand said "its nice to see how much the cards are appreciated".

The most valuable and most rare pokemon card ever is unique card, only one were made, it was sold to an American pokemon collector for 5 million monies after the original Japanese owner had pulled it out from a regulard card pack he bought for 15 monies a little less than 10 years ago.

That whole situation you described is such a perfect storm of hype culture, collector frenzy, and unintended consequences—and honestly, it’s also kind of darkly hilarious in a very human (and very capitalist) way. The crow having the time of its life? That’s poetic.

Let’s break this down a little:

Why did it blow up?

Collectors and resellers noticed that for the price of a cheap Happy Meal, you could get a Pokémon card pack that was actually worth more than the meal itself.

That kind of arbitrage (buying cheap and selling for profit) makes collectors go wild—especially if there's a chance of pulling a rare or valuable card.

FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) kicked in. It was a limited-time offer. Once it's gone, it's gone.

In Japan especially, Pokémon card culture is massive and deeply ingrained across generations. Combine that with social media hype, and it's over.

The fallout?

Mountains of uneaten food. People didn’t want the meal—just the cards.

That’s not a new phenomenon (similar things happened with Pokémon McDonald's promotions in the U.S. too), but this one seemed particularly dramatic.

McDonald’s looked bad. Tons of wasted food, with photos and videos circulating online.

Pokémon Company looked... weirdly proud. They focused only on the card popularity and demand, not on the waste or ethical questions.

I honestly should have kept and never opened Pokémon cards. I never thought they would still be going strong over 25 years later. Also, she has a face made for cum.

I made a dumb thing 25 years ago and exchanged a stash of Pokemon cards into a stash of hockey team cards. Guess which ones are the ones that now have value.

Damn. That's gotta hurt. I honestly thought that Pokémon was going to be a trend that would only last for a few years at most back in 1998 or so. And I mostly only played the Gameboy games. Boy, was I wrong!

Collectors, scalpers, and the like should all be round up and shot dead. You can't have fun/cool shit in this world because you'll have obsessed manchildren lining up at the crack of dawn to buy 10 of whatever is being offered so they can keep 1 in a case in the attic to collect dust and sell the other 9 for triple its worth. Kids can't even get a pack of cards with their goyslopmeal anymore because some stupid reddit chungus fuckwad is gonna scalp all of the toys from mcdonalds himself before little junior shitburger's mommy is willing to drive to mcdonalds for lunch at noon.
