Etiquette:
If there are two or more lanes (not counting turn/exit lanes) and you are in the left-most lane, then you must go faster than the person behind you or fuck off to a different lane.
Defensive posture:
If you are following the above rule and going at the speed limit, but are being followed too closely by a car behind you, you may adopt a defensive posture to improve your safety:
Option 1) Pull over and let the faggot go by
Option 2) Gradually go slower and slower so that if you need to brake, the faggot behind you will hit you at a less lethal speed. The faggot behind you will likely find this upsetting, but he only has 3 options: to take the hint and back the fuck off, to hit you and justify your safety slowdown and earn himself the entire legal and financial burden of insurance (unless he drives off), or most likely, to take the opportunity at your lower speed to go around you and continue his course to the gay brothel in front of you where he will be less of a danger.
Bonus lesson: beware of pickup trucks, the asshole factor goes way up. Poverty muscle cars like mustangs are also likely to be up your ass on the road, but tend to prefer speeding around past you at high speeds.
In some areas, you are required to pull over if four or more people are waiting to pass you, but people usually go 10 over in those areas and don't value their own safety, so you can ignore that requirement as long as you are going at the speed limit.
Remember: the retard behind you isn't going to get there faster by being closer to your car, he is only increasing his threat to your safety. Don't bow to his cunty behavior.

In my state if you are on the highway and everyone is going above the limit it is actually ok by law, however if you are spitefully driving below to be a mini cop you will get pulled over for disruptive driving.

Assuming the person is coasting reasonably and not taking a solid minute to clear 40 feet. In that case you arent saving gas. In Australia, not sure if this applies in the USA, there is a regulation that the speedo must not show a speed that is slower than the actual vehicle speed. So, manufacturers calibrate the speedo to be about 5km/h faster than the actual vehicle speed. This means if the speed limit is x, you can do x+5 according to your speedo and not be over the limit. But not everyone on the road knows this. Actually, a lot of people seem to go at 10-20km/h below the speed limit a lot of the time...
