This isn't the modern time. It's the in-between time of old ways and everything changing. Two people vowing to be together until death do they part, that transcends the ages. Unless they are both liars and don't really mean it and decide to divorce because they aren't in 'love' anymore. You don't marry for love. You marry to walk thru everything together united. That is way more than some feelings and stupid emotions. That is epic commitment. Few can actually see it thru.

Marriage is meant to create a symbolic union beyond hormonal alienation, it ideally extends the life of a couple indefinitely because of controlled pressure. Nowadays it isn't as effective but it still works.
