Except it's 99% the same as the book which was written in the 1920's and which had been filmed twice previously (though both times for television I think).
So it's not like Kubrick was showing something of his own devising, although he will have made some adjustments (the couple in the book are explicitly Jewish, Kubrick just lets you know they're Jewish by putting a menorah in every room in their apartment).
