Its actually needed, the problem is the US attacking russia economically essentially detached their entire country from any US influence over time and made full frontal war the only term that can be on the negotiating table.
If russia is stupid enough to take resources in alaska, and re-attach itself to the US sphere of influence economically then there is now something new that can be used to threaten them again.
