It’s our fault for choosing Shtokavian (aka serbo-croatian) as our standard language instead of one of the other two native Croatian languages.

Serbs were pusing the greater Serbia meme in the 19th century by denying the existence of Croatia and its history and you still do it today, but like I said that was partly our fault. Had we picked Chakavian things would have turned out differently. We even had another chance to finally abandon serbo-croatian in the 90s, but I guess it was too late by that point and we’re notoriously lazy.

Slovaks chose one of their eastern dialects as their standard language because it’s different enough from Czech so that it can be classified as its own language. Macedonians chose one of their western dialects because of Bulgarians.
We were naive and downright stupid 150 years ago. The Shtokavian language has been a disaster for the western balkan region.
