I recently started on a Lineage 2 server called L2Elegant purely for the nostalgia, and because modern games are shit. Even though the server is fairly populated, 90% of the players are in their 30s. Same shit in other mmos, like WoW. Why don't zoomers play MMOs?

Im a first generation zoomer. 1996. I played wow at its peak in bc and wotlk. Grinded runescape. Played dozens of others of mmo.
The issue with them these days is it moved from a grind you could get done in a few days or weeks to being weekly or daily gated. It is an incentive from developers to keep people playing over the lifetime of each update rather than grind content fast then quit until next update. Continued subscription money mainly being the root cause. It was fun to lock myself in all day to grind out rep. It isn't fun to login doing the same dailies for weeks for dozens of factions. It is fun to give myself carpal tunnel tick mining to be efficent. It isn't fun to have time limited auras for exp boost to be the most efficient possible on top of dailies, weeklies and monthlies. Hope that makes sense.

Best decision I ever made was to quit vanilla WoW when Nostalrius got shut down 10 years ago.
In the same time it took me to grind rank 14 and fail all my classes, I turned everything around, graduated with a bachelors in Physics and still had time to beat a dozen cozy single player games in my freshly-made backlog.

I chose option two.

cause games age. mmos get old in 6 months. if wow truely had hardcore mode there would be full loot with permadeath. no binding.

i can shit talk about EQ AC DaoC AO but no one else played it and had fun so why fucking bother? What fun will they have listening to me talk? It's been 25 years gaming hasn't been fun since 2020. The new battlefield looks good though but I'm not going to buy a new pc or console to play.

Although the entire game was dominated by bots and bot farms.

It's not worth it. I played WoW for 1 year and got bored because it was expensive, Runescape for years as a kid and and War Thunder for 6+ years.

You literally get nothing out of it other than stale memories of a bunch of grindy bullshit just to get the impression that you are better than other people. It didn't help during college which prevented me from getting a high paying job and I wasted years as a loser because of it.

I was only able to change my life somewhat by going to the gym and focusing on upgrading/business building. I was able to get an okay job but MMOs with a lack of control can ruin someone's life permanently.

I get flashbacks and cold chills whenever I see the hours people show on their Steam deck when it comes to MMOs.

How does someone design a MMORPG to not be grindy and a complete waste of time? Basically just make a open world RPG with social games, item crafting that doesn't require advanced skills, and any weapon can be picked up immediately if you find it???

Around 2010 they were all focusing first on how to efficiently milk the playerbase instead of how to make the game more enjoyable. This happened with every mmo i played during that time, around 2010 they all started to go to shit.

I still played using private servers though. And ragnarok online is still some sort of guilty pleasure i play every now and then to this day.

No business has an incentive to do that. The cost of an MMORPG to compete with existing ones is astronomical. If they aren't grindy they lose customers because the game would be easy to beat and therefore subscriptions do not matter.

Ever since I've had kids, I can't really play online games for two reasons.
1. I can't pause the game at any time.
2. I can't compete with other players considering I can't pour as many hours into the game.
I used to be play WoW 24/7, then a few online games and I would wreck faggots with my quick fingers.
Now I play offline strategy games or movie-video-games.
I don't miss Rust.

The only MMO that actually mattered was Wurm Online / Unlimited
the absolute freedom for unchecked autism and soul that existed was unheard of
