It's mostly a matter of economics vs social welfare.
The republicans fought a war with the democrats to end slavery. Democrats pretended to care about the working class for a while, but historically they have always been pro-slavery and more immigrants = more slaves.
As for everywhere else, they've just adapted that model.

They want you to associate concepts like the free market with the republicans and mass immigration with the democrats because that's how they mislead the masses, in reality it's far deeper that that. Trump has made a strong effort to regulate the market while the democrats allow illegals to roam in order to consolidate power, lower wages, and give companies an infinite supply of labor. Who sounds more in favor of the free market?

The left is ideologically built on things that inevitably lead to being pro immigration. It's not just an idea that people will randomly happen to have.
The right is people who don't like that ideology, which is why we're a lot more diverse in our ideas, but due to the rejection of this specific set of ideas are more likely than not have a general dislike of immigration, or excessive immigration, or maybe just immigration when it's used for the specific purpose of leftist goals. It varies person to person.

There are more political positions than simply "left" and "right", but sure let's use those.
Left is "progressive", under the delusion it means "better" when it really simply means "new".
Right is "conservative" meaning simply here "not new". As a result they are unlikely to improve things and merely continue old policies (from whatever the time period of their youth was, important to note).
Under this "new is good" belief of the left, that also means "new people".
