The cities were built within the last 20 years, so yes, they're basically reliant on tourism/media now due to lacking things that people want to trade for. They import almost everything from food to energy and get most of their credit from holding US treasuries. The US gives them oil and food for free pretty much, but it's definitely stagnant outside of this because there's no real focus outside of public works.
