Permaculture thread
The number one thing you can do to improve your odds of surviving WW3 is planting a garden. TPTB are already moving to restrict your ability to gather calories with bans on going into the woods to forage, fish or hunt, restrictions on fertilizer usage and gardening as a whole (Remember when they banned the sale of gardening supplies during COVID?). If you cannot supplement your calories, you will be starved into joining the military.

I'm not a farmer and this is just a fun fact, but I heard there is this grass you can plant in the fall that will simply die when it gets cold. But it's good to do because it brings nutrients up and then deposits them near the top when it dies. Forget what it's called though.

I would rather just plant clovers. They enrich the nitrogen in the soil, aren't so tall as to need mowing, provide lots of food for the bees, smell great, look great and are considered good luck.

I'd be growing some as well if not for the ban on growing it in my province. You can only buy it at the government owned weed store, just like how you can only buy liquor from the government owned liquor store.

Get your local council worker to dump free chipped trees in your yard. 1-2 trucks is enough for a decent full size 10 foot long hugelkultur.
As the chips are still green, they will compost in only a handful of weeks if you water the pile.
Thermophilic funghi will convert the whole pile into the most rich instant soil you can get. Inoculate with edible mushrooms in cold months if you want a hilariously large mushroom harvest.

I've mostly heard of people doing hugelkultur with logs that were buried in soil, but that works, too.
If you live in a noisy area (like near a road), you can make a bunch of ridges parallel to the road that will reflect a bunch of the noise upwards.

>As the chips are still green, they will compost in only a handful of weeks if you water the pile.
Absolutely not true. Fresh wood chips take ages to break down, especially if you're not turning it and adding nitrogen to the pile (piss)

I've done it with logs too, but it's at best awkward and at worst just a rat's nest.
You need straight logs to reduce voids in the mound. You also want the mound to "reduce" uniformly so you don't wind up with wet/dry patches.
They're amazing if you have nice, uniform logs like in scandinavia.
But wood chips do 60% of the job in 5% of the time and effort. If I had a bunch of straight trees and a backhoe, I would prefer hugelkultur proper.

You could probably get good results with a max of the two, letting chips fill in gaps.

This isn't a compost bin for women, fresh wood chip piles regularly burst into flames due to thermophilic bacterial and fungal decomposition. The fastest I have done is 4 weeks from cutting down the tree to cold soil. That was with turning, to be fair.
My current pile is 8 weeks old and stopped steaming two days ago. No turning, no nitrogen. Only water. It's all soil, now.
There's no need for additional "piss" because council chipped trees are wet and are 80% branches and leaves.

I haven't claimed to have a giant subsistence farm. I have very little room and I try to maximize what I get out of it. In the future, I hope to get a nice plot of land where I can really get a respectable collection of plants going. It doesn't take a lot of time or money to get going and see the benefit. If you really don't have any delayed gratification, start with something like microgreens. The harvest time is measured in days and you can do it in your bedroom if absolutely necessary.

By the time ww3 starts, AI will be issuing kill lists with all expandables, their photos, habits, places they could be found at and their combat ability.
And starlink satelite will just beam a bright red laser at your immediate location, visible from miles away.
Military will enter your house and Alexa will just go like "He is in a panic room behind the bookcase in the bedroom upstairs. The code is 93747. He also has a little tomato garden in the back, help yourselves".
