Peace talks were never the point. The point of inviting Putin to Alaska was always to humiliate him on TV for a pretext to send NATO troops into Ukraine.
There will be a line drawn on a map that Trump will show putin. Behind that line NATO will be stationed. the front of that line will still be contested by Russia/Ukraine. Russia can continue to fight until all their resources are depleted if they want to (which they will) but advancement any further will be an act of war on NATO.
This will be a war that continues for another decade. Trump knows it, Putin knows it, Zelensky the money grubber knows it.
The point is to turn the pot down to a simmer from a rolling boil and let it be a steady stream of income for the Military Industrial Complex and a slow draining of Russian wealth over a decade back to poverty.
