This is not how it works and the EU is a great example of this. Once you reduce economic inequalities, and basic labour becomes more expensive, the quality of life plummets for every social class except for the lowest one (that actually benefitted from the reduced inequality). This means middle class spends more and the money goes to useless people. The wages grow only for the lowest tier of workers. This also makes the scum of the society more entitled, which in turn makes everyone's life worst. Once the distance between the good productive people and the useless people has collapsed, the economy becomes depressed. It's too expensive and risky to start a new venture, the morals also become leaning more and more left. Since there is no point in trying to actually get rich, more and more people expect to suck on the government money.

Generally, it should be obvious that masks prevent spread of outside pathogen born of the mouth and nose given that every member of clinical staff in a hospital will wear one when in a worksite, or that SEA has cultures of people wearing them when sick, predating covid by decades.
People are still, to this day, conflating several ideas with the one core idea of masks- that they stop the spread of infection from the person wearing the mask to surfaces and other people. Obviously not entirely, but the actual big ask was asking everyone to begin wearing N95 masks and scrubs. It's a good solution to any spread of disease (by mouth or by nose) and Americans have, effectively, made it so that catching the flu is something one must endure with no mask at all, and so if you need to leave the house, everyone you encounter is getting it as well by getting so dramatic about it.

Obviously it's 'effective' when used in the right situation where it should be used. When you're answering the door to some delivery driver for a few moments, or walking down and spending a few minutes in a shop, and so on. It doesn't make any sense for people to be wearing them while also working a whole day, or while socializing with other people. For those situations, it has to be either don't do it at all, or you make sure everyone isn't sick before you get together.

The whole response was a total joke, we're just extraordinarily lucky it wasn't anywhere near as dangerous as the first strain was reported to be.

One is guessing 'this reduces your exposure to 10%' without any kind of idea about how likely you are to get sick from '1 exposure' or what counts as an exposure at all. If I'm in the workplace all day and we're all wearing masks, was that whole day just one exposure, or is it a new exposure every moment that passes? If the whole day is one exposure (or 1/10 of an exposure) what does that mean about when I stand unmasked next to an unmasked person for thirty seconds? Is that 1 whole exposure?


Absolutely fine for a few weeks of an emergency lockdown or for when you have no other choice but to not take real precautions, but it's still absurd for people to use it like it's a protective seal for two years. If people come away from the pandemic with the idea that the lockdowns and mask mandates were a really great idea if only compliance was higher, we'll be fucked in the next pandemic.
