Why do pitbulls get their reputation as if they're some "evil" dog?

I own three of them and have a young family with small kids.
Nothing has happened and the dogs are great.

I think pitbull owners are bad people, and that's why they're subject to pitbull attacks.

I used to think it was just bad owners rewarding bad behavior until it becomes dangerous because that does happen a lot with these dogs, but then my aunt's pit bull mauled someone and I know for a fact that dog was treated well and properly trained. One day he just snapped. There's something wrong with them, like that one fucked up line of golden retrievers in the 90s that had a similar random snapping problem.
But those dogs got put down and stopped being bred. People keep breeding pit bulls.
