>He has land and isn't growing a bunch of perennial fruit/nut plants on it
Wooooow, it's like you want to die of starvation during WWIII.

That's like 30% of people at this point

If you don't have land, I'm not going to shame you for it. I know how bad the real estate market is. I certainly don't have as much room as I'd like.

How hard are nuts to grow? Serious answers only.

Most nut varieties take quite a while to get established (think 5-7). That's why I've been suggesting hazelnuts. They're delicious, very productive, low maintenance and mature in as little as 3-4 years depending on variety. That's comparable to berry bushes.

Damn, sounds like a tough nut to crack, time-wise. But surely it pays off in maturity?

There are way more difficult nuts than hazelnut.
Try cracking a heartnut.

Hey! I asked nicely. Please don't crack my nuts here. This is hard enough as is and I'm just coming out of my shell.

Literally to "dunk on the poors".
My grandmother refused to eat rice because she said it was "poor people food".

I meant the length of time to maturity. Is it a long-producing and in good volume at maturity?

Nut trees generally live a very long time and produce more than you can eat yourself. You won't care if the squirrels get fat and delicious on them.

I have mulberry, peaches, pears, blackberry(a LOT), raspberry, black raspberry, black walnut, butternut, pecans, spicebush, apples(not doing well), plums, cherry, and pawpaw. All on less than an acre.

One day I wish to have 100 acres and many white children running and picking my fruit and eating daily, and then I can share the rest with the hungry neighbors of community and maybe even get some income from a market.

I'll never have this because they)) rigged the financial system against poor southerners like me, but this is my American dream.

Yeah, they're a PITA. I don't bother with them, lol.

The apple tree I grew from seed has suffered badly from rust just in the past few days. Don't know if it will make it. It's only a year old. If it doesn't I suppose I have weeded out bad genetics. I want an orchard of different fruit trees that require no human input to survive other than possibly watering during severe drought.

I believe one of my issues is the abundance of black walnut in the area and juglone in the soil. Most of the stuff I grow is juglone tolerant, apples are not and they happen to perform very poorly, but also it's hot as fuck in my zone (7b)
had my first nectarine this year!

Yeah, I'm also in the South. Just seems like pears are a better fit here than apples. Damn useless bradford pears are everywhere like weeds. I'm going to grow some Asian pears.

Oh, yeah, that's actually pretty likely. Black walnuts are delicious and the hulls can be used as a natural dye, so it's not all bad.

Berry bushes generally take 3 years to become mature. Fruits trees usually take a little bit longer. It'll also depend on whether it's grown from seed, a rooted cutting or a graft, and if it's a graft to what rootstock.

Basically, it depends. Start now.

Survival on this planet is gay.

I have obtained enlightenment and therefore need not incarnate in the physical unless God presents me with a special assignment. Just gonna continue gorging out on NEETbux while the getting is good.

Have fun being Sneed farmers while I feed from the Trees in Heaven's Groves......

Pro tip: enlightenment never ends, just as the Sun keeps emanating light

One mature hazelnut tree provides enough calories for an adult male to survive a month.
It doesn't take too many trees, shrubs and vines before you've accounted for a huge chunk of your daily calories.

Not a matter of "grow" matter of harvesting that is the pain.
In an emergency starvation scenario...
>Gather acorns
>gater pinecones before the drop for the pine nuts
>sunflowers and pumpkins are good seed sources
There are other plants in certain parts of the Americas like lotus seeds, but honestly anything edible would be consumed for the calories.

Acorns are only edible after a bunch of processing, so most people don't bother and just feed them to pigs.
