Europeans already send 500 billion dollars to the US each year, i'm including the russians, saudis, qataris, south koreans, chinese and japanese in my big bag of europeans.
There are countries with a trade surplus and countries with a trade deficit. The countries with a surplus have to fund the deficit of the countries with a deficit.
All these countries give money to the US so that the US gets money to buy enough goods to get a 500 billion dollar deficit.
This is the source of debt. In countries like argentina, having such huge debts causes an economic crisis, but the US is different because the interest rates are very low, lower than inflation, and the US can prints the currency of the debt.
But i think Trump now wants the long term stored wealth. Like not just an income tax on europe but also a wealth tax.
