They do this by creating lots of specialized parts and then stop manufacturing the parts after a few years so the car eventually becomes impossible to repair. You can keep a modern car for 10+ years still, but past 10 years it becomes harder and harder to find replacement parts for it unless it's a really popular make and model. Then you could probably drive it for 20+ years.
