Being a current resident of this state, I can only say that this place is bargain bin California at best. The same restrictions are applied minus the beaches, weather and weed
But the gun and self defense laws make up for this

Also 3x property tax costs, 2x electric bills more than Socal. Very few good places to eat outside I35 corridor, everybody is 300 lbs outside of DFW, horrible bugs, snakes, scorpions etc.

But no state income tax so that saves a bunch from California.

I thought it was bullshit too, but a lot of the bigger cities are unironically like this. Texas is actually really diverse, has plenty of lgbt walking around, a lot of feminist movements around, etc. and no it wasn’t always like that. Texas is a dump, people drive crazy there, it takes hours to get to a grocery store or a decent place to eat, its humid and too hot, the water is terrible. I'd rather live in Arizona than Texas. You have the benefit of being close to California water without being too far inland and you don't pay CA taxes living in Arizona.
