I tried playing Australia in hoi3, just for a change. I like a challenge so I played nonaligned, that is neither joining the Axis or the Allies.
The problems soon surfaced. Australia is just too small in population and too low in tech to do anything of significance by itself. Even by min maxing from 1936 onward I wasn't able to produce any aircraft carriers until 1941, and that was with dedicating nearly everything to their production. By 1942 I still only had a small army, a small air force, and a very basic navy. Regardless I decided to press on, relying upon the staunch heroism of my "Diggers" to carry the day. I choose to attack the weakest faction in the region, the Allies, who were hard pressed by the Japanese. I sent my entire force up to take Singapore and Malaysia, to secure those vital oil fields and mineral resources. I even signed a non-aggression pact with the Japanese to ensure no conflict developed between us.
At night my invasion fleet sailed stealthily through the Banda Sea, on its way to create a mighty Australian Empire which would last for a thousand years!
A British fleet intercepted me south of Singapore and just about wiped me out. My precious carriers sunk. Half my army gone. My air force in tatters. I retreated in shame, but defiantly determined to uphold the honor of Australia by fighting to the death. For a further three years nothing much happened until the Americans invaded Japan and put them out of the game. In the meantime I shored up my home defenses and tried to rebuild my forces, using every bit of manpower, every last piece of industrial capacity, squeezing out as many mineral resources from the God blessed Holy land of Australia.
Then the Americans landed.
Near Brisbane and Sydney.
They brushed aside my home army like a Canadian with a leaf blower.
Their massive fleet of carriers sank anything of mine which dared move.
They wiped me out in a matter of weeks.
That is Australia.
