it's way simpler - trump proposed a temporary solution to get his nobel, with the war renewing in the nearest decade. It was just pushing the problem away in time
putain is putting it all on the edge of knife - he wants the territorial gains to be permanent and written into international law, with ukraine raising no qualms about them
as for what hohols should do - it's up for them. The first option gave them hopes of reclaiming the territories. It would only be possible if Russia economically collapsed in the future. The second option is partitions, but ends the war and let's them start anew. Without NATO membership it's meaningless though. I think if hohols lost their eastern provinces and got NATO membership, it's at least something.
