Thats because those religions did not seek to regulate society as a whole, it was not out of forced cohesion, societies back then took the live/let live seriously and not just as a pretentious meme, they were forced to do so by the fear of retaliation another human being could pull off, everyone was on equal footing as far as the force of a grip of hands around someone's neck was, so any form of cohesion was kept in an organic way without the governments regulating every part of your life.
