Making housing more affordable goes against the interests of people who already have homes, those who invest in real estate, and large real estate businesses and corporations. I do not personally buy this argument.

I am a small time developer who focuses on “historic” houses (houses pre ww1) and rehabbing dead small downtowns with mixed use (aka older pre ww2 buildings into apartments). And all of these things offer more character than a modern apartment. So if the state offered something like Singapore then people would still want to rent shit I own for a higher price due to nicer location, and features. This wouldn’t apply to the shitty overpriced new apartments but it would still apply to houses in neighborhoods I believe.

Socialized housing is always expensive and difficult, but in a high trust society like Singapore it become a lot more feasible. Heavy law enforcement tackling corruption as well as petty crime. If you are criminally inclined you are taken out of the picture pretty fast or you learn not to be, so the system does not incur the expense of either low level of high level corruption.
