There might have been many reasons, why he surrendered. His family might have been taken hostage, he might have been facing overwhelming forces with a confirmed airstrike on his column with 0 chance of success, he might have been betrayed by his officers in the last moment out of fear, putler might have threatened to nuke moscow in case he lost it, anything could be the case.
