russia wants:
all the regions it currently has a foot on regardless of how much they are actually captured
odessa, so ukraine would be cut off from the sea
ukraine to limit it's army to only 50K or less
ukraine to not receive any weaponry from any other countries
ukraine to never join nato
ukraine may join eu, but there are voices in russia that this should also never be allowed
ukraine to reintroduce russian as the second state language
ukraine to unban all the pro-smo pro-russian politicians and political parties
there are also different variants of how much land russia should get. Some want a total partition, some want only Lviv region to remain for ukraine. Others want total elimination of ukrainian statehood.
there's probably more but I forgot.

All in all russia wants more it was able to achieve until now before it even considers stopping military action. To achieve all that at this point, ukraine would have to essentially surrender.

More russians have died by far. The war going on in the long run benefits Ukraine since the russia is demilitarizing itself.
