I bought a house for $360k at 6.1% last year and immediately regretted it. First of all, none of the houses I can afford are actually nice enough for the monthly bill to be worth it. Second, none of them will appreciate so much that I actually make any money given this interest rate on a 30 year mortgage. Lastly, the amount of work and unexpected expenses that go into owning a home are truly absurd now. Boomers and hippies let these things rot and now as a result you get slapped with a $50k emergency expense you have to cover right after you buy. I also had to move out to the country to do it. There’s no young people here. It’s all boomers and white trash that dump their garbage in your street. It would've been better if I rented some cheap mass produced condo somewhere young people actually live and simply lived my life well. Any cash I had could’ve been squirreled away into stocks and crypto and I would’ve made similar if not better returns than on the home equity but with no interest paid. Mortgages are the ultimate scam in 2025. Pay cash or don’t buy.
