Just wanted to ask other anons if they’ve had a similar experience lately in this brave new world we are living in.

So I’m a sales guy specifically cars. I switched to this from a different career and was a natural from day one. Always the top seller everywhere I went. So I went to a big corp. my manager was a lady who I had a good working relationship with. After a couple years of consistent top selling I find out she’s trying to get me fired by higher ups. It sours our relationship but basically I do nothing and within 6 months I get fired.

Ff it’s three years later and I’m working at a mom and pop dealership. Top of the sales board every month. I was offered a management position but declined preferring to sell as it would make more money. There was this 80iq woman who was the receptionist and got promoted to event sales manager. She sold exactly 0 events in a year and a half and somehow got promoted to sales manager. My boss. Within a week I am written up for dubious reasons. I sell three cars over the weekend and the other two guys that were working sold one between them. New manager “it’s a little unfair that you got three sales and they only got one”

Like wtf. She obviously has a hate on for me because she’s written me up for things done months before she was manager. Also it’s an incentive based SALES job - fair has nothing to do with it. I didn’t snake these other guys or steal their customers, I just have better skill than them. I know I’ll be getting fired soon. What is it with women first of all, being shoe horned into positions they aren’t qualified for, and second as soon as they have a tiny amount of power they will go after someone who performs? Like is t her new job to do more sales? Why would you gun for your strongest sales person?

I limit my time with lower percentage people and try to be available to people I peg as high percentage chance of buying. That’s really where the increased performance comes from. I mean it kind of depends but I usually meet and greet, I really like starting out with a question like “what brings you by today?” Because a lot can be discerned from the answer. Then I kind of let them talk and lead them with anbother question after the talking from the previous question is dying down. actually don’t talk a whole lot contrary to popular belief. Once they express interest in a particular car I of course tell them about the options etc but once theyre on one car I say something like “if you could buy this car today what would you do with it? Would you drive down the 95 to Florida? Would you drive it to work and the grocery store? Drive for uber?” There is a lot that can be deduced from that answer as well and I play it accordingly. If the guys buying to drive uber or go to work then I come from an economical place. If hes buying for fun or enjoyment or luxury I sell the sizzle.

If I a guy identifies a pain point like for example he wants to buy a truck but he’s not sure of the financing. Or maybe he wants to buy sports car but he’s never had one and not sure if he’s going to like it or feel the value of having a thrilling car. I basically focus on that issue immediately and ignore the other issues price, condition, etc. once you’re doing all this work on his toughest issue the other issues lose importance.

So they guy on the truck that is worried about financing I would immediately sit him down, get him a payment estimate if we could get him the loan. Write it up on paper. That way you’re focused and once the financing comes through, that’s become the only issue which is now solved and all the other time wasting questions about condition, price, fuel economy etc have already been made secondary by him as well and you can just walk him into the office at full price

The guy on the sports car I would make a big deal about the test drive. I wouldn’t just go pull the car out I would make him set an appointment to drive the car, subtly making it a bigger deal than it really is. Then on the ride I usually drive first, turn on the stereo and go for a good long ride and punch the gas once or twice. Then pull over and let him drive. Usually they drive very conservatively and I say “give it a little gas if you want” which they 90% of the time only give it a little shot and that’s it but it still becomes exciting and fun to them then you take them back and walk them directly into the office.

If it’s a luxury car I turn the stereo off and try to drive smoothly and as quietly. If it’s a convertible top down and stereo on.

If the guy is talkative I usually start by talking about the car but quickly turn to talking about themselves and their lives and don’t even mention the car after the first few sentences.

If I think the guys ready when we stop back at the dealership I’ll reach over and grab the keys out and ask him straight up do you want to buy it? If not I’ll let him get out and walk around the car looking at it for a few minutes then ask for the sale

Yes I stumbled upon the theory but it works. I have had dozens of deals where I had the guy so worked up about his issue that once I worked through it we were already headed to the f and I office and we haven’t even had time to discuss price or anything. It works great for getting 100% asking. Works about 3/4 of the time.

Also I like writing the deal up before we discuss price. If it’s a guy who’s focused on price I show him the car first. Once he starts trying to dicker or make an offer I usually say if you want to discuss numbers let’s go sit down and write it up. Then he will basically let me know if he’s ready to sit down and negotiate or if he still wants to check out the car. Once I have him sat down I ask for a DL and fill in a four square. I like to ask for the DL so it seems more official. I fill in all his and the car information then I always like to write the full price on the sheet before he makes an offer. If he has made an offer already I write the full price, scratch it out and write “offer 10k” or whatever. There’s something about seeing the full price on paper that makes their offer more reasonable. Some guys even just go with it and don’t say another word on price

If you really want to get the best deal just go to the salesman and say you really want the car but you need some help on the price. Most of the time they will require you to make an offer but if they discount $500 to $1000 for you then you have an even lower starting point to make your offer. Be respectful. This is those men’s living you are talking about and the days of offering 10k off are long gone. If you can secure 10% off asking price you’ve done well. Making a super low offer as a starting point is a bad idea it insults sales managers. Their bottom dollar is usually 8-10% below list price so you’d be better off making an offer at 12% off and then agreeing to come up a little to meet you and get the sale than to offer 20% off and they will clam up and maybe offer you 500 or 1k off.
