The U.S. Navy has deployed the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), which consists of the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7), USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD-28) and USS San Antonio (LPD-17) home-ported in Norfolk, Virginia, alongside several thousand Marines with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, to the Southern Caribbean Sea as part of a ramped-up effort to combat drug cartels in Latin America. In addition, the Navy will also allocate a nuclear-powered attack submarine, a number of P-8A “Poseidon” Maritime Patrol and Surveillance Aircraft, several Arleigh Burke-Class Guided-Missile Destroyers, and a Ticonderoga-Class Guided-Missile Cruiser to the control of U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), which will give President Trump a broad range of military options should he want to target drug cartels in South and Central America.
