That is negated by the fact we have a higher cost of living and are forced to use more expensive form of transportation (owning a car) because most places don't have public transit. Our taxes are lower but still take a huge portion of our paycheck.

I drive concrete mixers and legally I can drive up to 16 hours once per week (only more than 14 hours once per week). I also legally have to have 10 hours off between shifts. That's it. I can drive 15 hours on Monday and then drive 13 hours a day for the rest of the week with 10 hours off.

It can be fun working long hours if you make decent money and have good benefits. Getting blasted 2 days a week does not make you an alcoholic anymore. These trades people drink daily then get blasted drunk right before bed every night. The other issue is since they drink so dam much they end up over salting their food to get the electrolytes back. All of this salt, lack of veggies in the diet and alcohol really fucks up the blood flow.
