>he fell for the Russian propaganda
If you haven't noticed, Russia has been increasingly dropping points from "their reasons of starting the war". Since they can't just outright admit it's been about a landgrab, they had to single out a #1 reason "why we attacked ukraine", and that ended up being nato membership because it's the most quantifiable one and doesn't sound schizo.
Problem for putin is, this effectively blocks him from any peace negotiations, because nato membership for Ukraine is the only non meme way they get security guarantees. But Russia now can't accept that, because remember? It's the whole reason why they started the war, and if they now say fine even the biggest retard in Russia will wake up and wonder what the fuck all this was for.
So putin is in more of a stalemate position than people think, negotiation wise at least.
For Ukraine it's a bit simpler: no security guarantees - no deal.
