If the SNP hadn't spent the last 20 years in power making promises and then breaking them at every opportunity and failing on every benchmark that they themselves set, then maybe independence would have succeeded. It's very difficult for a lot of people to trust we can go it alone when our current government is failing us at so many points. If the SNP had actually worked to improving Scotland then there would have been little debate.

Scottish independence was based solely on immediately joining the EU and putting up a hard border with their major trade partner that gives them billions in funding.
Scotland would have become a third world country behind anywhere else in Eastern Europe if it became independent, their sole strategy for economic growth was speaking English and maybe companies that want to be in an EU country but sell stuff in England would want to set up there.....

I know the IH and Caithness was owned by Norway (at its height), but I had no idea they managed to own land much further down. Just that area I mentioned, IH, OH, IoM, Orkney and Shetland Islands (the latter Norway got to keep after the Treaty of Perth because Alexander III wanted to reclaim rightful Norwegian territory).

If Britain and Ireland could adopt the US model, we could have an island union where each county/region has extensive protection and its own self-governance, while having our common defense and internal free movement (Britain and Ireland have free movement now separate to the EU), it would turn out great, and free us from the constant threat of retarded monarchs. Irelands current government is largely modelled on the US anyways. Even including Ireland we are genetically barely different, and you can't meet someone in Britain and know where they're from until they start talking as we just look and act the same.
