The non-black neighbors realized no law enforcement was coming to save any of them. The neighborhood finally teamed up, gathered weapons, and hid themselves in an attic, only leaving for supplies or to take care of marauding blacks. He couldn't admit it outright but sounds like they killed attackers when necessary.

That man was haunted by what happened. He witnessed and experienced evil at the hands of blacks who went wild when the electricity went out and law enforcement disappeated.

It was pretty comfy to help out, all things considered. Looking back I should have gotten a bunch of pictures because that whole week+ of work was some of the best content for abandoned stores, abandoned malls, cool liminal spaces.

I was stationed at Naval Station Pascgoula at the time and we had a rental house in town. A lot of people forget that the summer in 2005 there were a handful of tropical storm that looked like they were going to hurricanes but ran out of steam before they made it to land. We had to get underway to avoid all of them and it was super annoying. When Katrina was on it's way, everyone was basically over it because the news had been drumming up all these other storms that didn't do anything. I remember being at my girlfriends apartment in gulfport and saying "it'll probably die down and be nothing." I left and we got underway and I didn't get back to the gulf coast for like a month. The destruction was unreal up and down the highway I had been used to driving. Shrimp boats in trees and the casinos were picked up and set on the other side of the highway. There was one casino, Treasure Bay or something that was a pirate ship and it's remains looked wicked, like a busted ghost ship. I wish I still had the picture but it was saved on an old Sidekick 2.

I was part of the disaster relief effort, communities and churches came together to offer aid. Off road vehicle shops sold their side by sides at cost to help people trying to rescue stranded residents. The highway was fixed in a matter of months. I am used to southeast florida hurricanes so when I happened to be up there when it hit it was really easy. Especially since the people up there had no idea what to do. Here's the guide for all of you who don't know how to deal with an incoming natural disaster:

1) have a generator, harbor freight sells small quiet ones for not that much money. the ability to charge your phone and keep your fridge running so your food doesn't spoil is a big deal. Also, lights at night are very nice to have, especially if you don't keep oil lanterns around (i do).

2) Gasoline, have 3-6 5 gallon jugs empty in your garage. One should be full at all times, use Stabil if you don't use the gas frequently. If a hurricane/disaster is approaching you, fill them all up and don't wait until the day before it hits. Gas runs out fast and if there is bad damage it doesn't get refilled right away.

3) Propane or Charcoal, you should have a way to cook hot food. Focus on the basics, burgers, chicken, etc. Having a gas stove is really advantageous in this situation, no electric? Just start it with a lighter.

5) Bottled water (to an extent), A case or two of bottled water per person is a nice luxury, but if you are really worried about an interruption in your water utility, fill your bathtub. The US has potable water, it might be shitty (especially if you are in flint michigan or other lead pipe places) but most areas you can drink the water. If your tub drain leaks, put duct tape over it first before filling it up. Congratulations, you now have 40 gallons of water and if you lose water just use a bucket and now you can flush your toilet.

6) Frozen foods like ground beef, green beans, peas. Even if you can only power your freezer for a few hours a day with your generator, these will retain their cool temperature for a pretty long time and should last until your power is restored. If you are out of power for over 10 days you better have your generator working though.

From Central MS so we were pretty inland from the worst of the damage but still got it bad. Trees fell all along the road I lived on on both ends basically so my mom and I couldn't make it to our house so we ended up staying with my grandmother along with a few other family members in a two bed, one bath house for a week as they cleaned up from the storm. It was rough but you know what, it wasn't that bad. We made it. It was nice being surrounded by family. 7) Chainsaw, a small (16"-18") chainsaw is a great tool to have for an emergency. It can help you clear roads and driveways and get trees off cars. Very useful, but be sure you use it some before bringing it out during a disaster. Chainsaws are dangerous and it's better to have a tree over your driveway than it is to have a deep cut on your leg or a broken arm from the tree snapping while you cut it.

8) Guns and ammo. Worse comes to worse and you get looters, you need to be able to protect yourself and your community. Even if you never talk to your neighbors, when a hurricane hits I guarantee you will become friends and look out for each other. Do not expect 911 to work. Emergency services will be dealing with missing persons, looters, and all kinds of bullshit. Your call (if your phone even works) will have to get in line behind everyone else and maybe they can come check on you tomorrow.

9) Pet Food and nonperishables. Make sure you have enough to take care of your pets for at least a week at all times. This should be standard advice, but people sometimes forget about this stuff when they think they will be playing rambo or whatever. Keeping a decent stock of nonperishables for people is also smart. Peanut butter, crackers, jerky, honey, canned soup, canned vegetables, etc.

10) Tools, building materials and stuff like that. You might need to board up a window, make a sign, change a tire, brace a tree or a roof, fix a fence temporarily, or work on a small engine like a generator or chainsaw. Having some supplies lying around and a little knowhow goes a long way. Keeping some oil for generators is a great idea too. A lot of people forget how frequently you change that stuff when running 24/7. A roll of caution tape can also save someone's life if you have a downed power line.
