why did america fail in iraq? afghanistan? well, why did anyone ever expect them to succeed? how could they govern those countries? they can't even govern themselves.

when you talk to americans they want the same shit that everyone else wants. universal healthcare is overwhelmingly popular. so is gun control. so is all the same shit that works in europe. they want the same social democracy that everyone in the west wants because that's why everyone in the west has it. but their political system is uniquely unresponsive to the electorate.

some research i read a while ago showed that literal fucking autocracies like turkey and belarus are more responsive to public opinion than american democracy.

anyway, the point is that fundamentally the thing that is wrong with americans is their refusal to accept that their problems are entirely of their own making. the reason why there are so many illegal immigrants is because american government is utterly incapable of solving the problem. and as the failures mount, the tensions build, and you arrive at the current situation where absolutely nobody believes the current america is worth saving and all that's left is to fight it out for what's left of the corpse that hasn't already rotted away.

to be more specific, the problem is the bill of rights and the supreme court, and the filibuster/minority party rule. those are the two key problems with america.

Nah, the Hughes Court, which was the court that presided over most of FDR's presidency would strike down some aspects of New Deal legislation that FDR tried to pass. He didn't get 100% of what he wanted, and he threatened to pack the court, but never followed through.

Many states already had laws allowing voting for senators because there was a growing problem with how fractionalized the union had become.
There were Congresses that didn't have enough senators to pass anything because people in one party never agreed with the other party on who to send to the senate.

The US system was built on the idea that no two politicians should be on the same team because as soon as politics becomes a team sport, everyone loses.

Then Hamilton said "But I get more money and influence if I make it a team sport".

i do think the senate only exists to block bills from passing, but we are also a union of states, and if we strip away the remaining voting power of the smaller states, what is the benefit of them remaining in the union? though state patriotism is probably at an all time low anyway.
