Experts warn about the dangers of doing your own research
I find myself agreeing with scientists this time. Most people are tired of know it all 4channers who fix toilets for a living and think they are more knowlegdeable than nuclear scientists. Research bros are always fucking wrong.

The problem isn't that doing your own research is somehow bad, the problem is that being an ignorant moron and trying to do your own research will not result in you reaching the right conclusions. You would have to know:
1) How to find credible sources of information.
2) How to correctly interpret the data found.
3) How to collect all of the data needed for a correct conclusion.
4) How to use the data to make a correct conclusion.
And none of this is easy, some people do this for years in universities and are still crap at it.

Meanwhile other people google begging the question, get some anecdotal confirmations and think they've figured it all out.

Confirmation bias is a hell of a thing. Usually what happens is you get people who already had a desired answer in mind and then just find it/ignore anything contrary.
