I'm sure there is a greater reason why this is the case now. My guess is simply "because nations can". In the past, war was limited by the amount of resources a state could muster. Food, and seasons played a large role, as logistics were also reliant on looting foreign land. logistic baggage trains capable of supporting an army in the tens of thousands was literally impossible in the past. Interestingly one of the only nations to conduct war on a large scale in the past was France. I think France being the most populous country back then was no coincidence. In essence, the state is corrupt and will send people to die for dumb shit and the only thing limiting them is the amount of resources they can throw at it. In Ukraines case, they have a population size not so much smaller than France in WW1, and economic backing from half of the world. It should be no surprise that has played out the way it did.
