Millennials had a different relationship with Indians when they were growing up. There were only a handful around and they either integrated/assimilated pretty well or were entirely irrelevant. That's exactly it. It was also much easier to believe that racism was over back then because the vast majority of societal dysfunction was confined to small areas that were very easy to avoid and you'd have no reason to go to anyway. You're also right that Obama's 2nd campaign was when things really started to go off the rails.
