Even if the van slammed on the breaks immediately there still wasn't much distance to slow down.
That van was going to crash at high speed unless ot completely swerved to the right right away, and who knows what would've happened in that scenario

Interstates are easily 70mph, meaning traffic goes 75-80. You can't physically stop that fast. Going 70mph, you need about 400 feet from the time you initiate stopping under perfect conditions.
