Plastic was first widely used after the 1950s.
Plastic bottles and similar didn't become common until mid 1970s.
Most plastic and plastic packaging only existed post 1970s.
Most cans used to be steel not aluminum.
Broken glass and metal had less impact and broke down easier being smashed and rusting until they were just dust made of similar things the soil already was silica and iron oxide.
Packaging was also mainly a first world only thing.
Populations were also lower so a small number of people had less impact.

Now plastic is aroundlong term, colored more vibrant and annoying, and breaks down into harmful microplastics.
And there is a lot more people and less wilderness and free space.
