Is Jew Jitsu really that good or has it been astroturfed?
Everyone says Jiu jitsu is the best martial art as far as grappling goes for self defence. Is that true or is it a whole lot of marketing? The more I look at it it seems like the Gracie family are just shameless self promoters and now they have the podcast Jews on their side.

To me it seems like Judo and maybe wrestling + boxing or thai boxing would be best. What’s your take anons?

depends.
>worth getting a blue belt
yes
>worth progressing past that if you are older than 25 when you start?
nope
>best for self defense
for on the ground self defense, yes. mma will always be the king. you need striking, standup, and ground martial arts skills at a proficient level. but a gun will always be better if you have to fight. conflict resolution is king.

Do Gracie Survival Tactics. It’s basically BJJ with a punch block series. Also learn boxing and how to shoot a gun. That’s literally all you need. Do cardio. Workout like 3 times a week. You will be fine anon. The easiest thing to do is just move away from niggers.

If you're gonna fight in the cage, sure
For real life it doesn't matter, you're not gonna grapple if it's more than 1v1, you're gonna trip one and kick them in the throat or temple so you can deal with #2
A single punch is potentially fatal, so all real fights are a threat to your life and should be treated accordingly. Don't try to be above a roflstomping

Krav was never the big thing because it is a meme, there is no comp.
Jiu Jitsu is good because its widely available and easy to find a decent school because of the widely available competition circuit. For the average person BJJ is easier to learn because of this. Judo is cool, but difficult to find a good gym. It's impossible to find a wrestling gym for adults, nor should adults learn wrestling due to neck injury potential. Boxing is for niggers. MMA striking or Muay Thai is what people should look for in order to do striking.
The only thing I see taking it's place is MMA gyms in general. I have seen a growing trend of specialized gyms closing and being absorbed by gyms that teach multiple disciplines.

Boxing
Kick Boxing
Wrestling

All legit and all part of being a complete fighter. Knowing and live training in one of them will have you dominating 99% of the population if you end up in a confrontation.

If I could start over I would start with a few years of boxing and conditioning with the occasional BJJ and Judo. Then I would go into Karate which I prefer. I would always hang out at the boxing club, kickboxing is fun too. Then after four years of training I'd start checking out all the other techniques for fun and to learn what I'm missing.

After that, I'd probably move to Japan and practice Kudo for the rest of my life if I could.

Braindead. This advice only applies to men who are heavy enough to throw significant punches. For wristlets, women and children they also need to know how to turtle to escape the back control of their would-be rapist and then cripple his legs so they can either run away or choke them out.

Is it true that boxing has better footwork and distance control than muay thai making it better for defending against multiple attackers and other street scenarios? I’ve also heard people say boxing is a lot easier to learn.

If you're young & your body can take the practice room abuse, Folk Wrestle & learn a few BJJ sweeps & subs.

If you're not in HS but still feel young, do BJJ via an MMA nogi focused gym, you usually get some Muay Thai striking at no extra charge.

If you're in mid 30+ a sport BJJ gi focused school that's a little slower & easier on the body but still keeps you in shape & gives you some skills.

For self defense: GET A PISTOL.

The answer usually ends up being boxing + some training to check kicks. Do what you enjoy though. Anyone who works hard enough to study a martial art isn’t realistically ever going to be dumb enough to get into a fair fight.

Grappling is grappling. Judo, wrestling and jiujitsu are skillsets of grappling. The Gracie family are a bunch of shills now but they did prove a name for themselves. Any BJJ gym worth a shit doesn't adhere to the Gracie method strictly. That being said, if you really want to learn how to fight it is a combination of striking and grappling. Always has been, always will be. Personally I have a few years of boxing and almost a decade of grappling experience.

Yes and no. Boxing has those against trad MT. But MT has been rapidly evolving due to the implementation of 4oz gloves. Modern Muay Thai is basically MMA w/o ground grappling. So you learn trips, sweeps and clinching in addition to striking. You can primarily box as a MT fighter, there are a bunch of styles. Kicks are also insanely OP against untrained opponents. The only time I have ever been in a fight outside of a gym/ring I was able to win after getting sucked punched because I threw low kicks until the guy was apologizing on the ground.
Boxing gyms also suck because it's a nigger tier sport. The way boxing gyms spar leads to serious brain damage. Whereas (good) MT and MMA gyms that are good have a team culture of working together to get better.

Thanks for the breakdown anon. I would have thought Muay Thai sparring would be just as dangerous for head trauma…

So if you had limited time would you say 6 months or so of bjj or judo plus 6 months of Muay Thai is sufficient for self defence provided the individual is athletic and strong enough ?

If you are at striking range it's always better to just run away for defense. But if you are already getting grabbed, you don't have a choice but to know how to grapple to escape.
Now for _offense_ striking is better, and anyone who tries to persuade you that they are doing it for defense, are just looking for excuses to use it against weaklings.
Anonymous (ID: V/MB4ZYQ) United States No.513340645 >>513353637

MT sparring is less dangerous for two primary reasons. The culture of MT sparring is much more relaxed, it's treated like that more than a fight. So it is uncommon at (good) gyms for your sparring partner to try and knock you out. Secondly due to kicks and clinching being part of MT the overall volume of hits are spread out across the body. Boxing is much more head hunting focused, while you do use body shots. Mostly people aim for the head.
If I could only choose one to spend 6 months on it would be MT. Fights all start on your feet. MT has striking and standup grappling. If you are strong, clinching is OP. 6 months is not long enough to get to BJJ blue belt unless you went like 8 times a week to a gym. Judo takes a long time at most gyms, because Olympic judo is the standard in most gyms. Physical judo training takes a long time for most people and they teach both the physical and academic side of judo so it takes a lot of time.

6 months of BJJ will be useful but you'll be severely limited and probably overestimate yourself. 6 months of striking would be much more valuable. Takes like 5-10 years to get a BJJ black belt for reason, most of your advancement beyond basic tech is based on 'feel' for what works which take a lot of time.

Probably around middleweight so like 185lbs/84kg. Obviously give or take like 20lbs depending on skill level in martial arts. I'm not the best fighter at my gym but I am one of the largest at 230lbs and our "best" fighter who fights at 155lbs has hit me as hard as he could with an overhand right to the jaw during a shark tank preparing for his most recent fight and it didn't even phase me. Whereas a mw we have who has only been at it for like a year nearly knocked me unconscious in sparring with a overhand right. Obviously this is just my personal experience but most people's punches are laughably weak if they are new to martial arts unless they are around that weight.

Depends on the gym. Any gym that promotes quickly is probably bullshit. Should take around 2 years to get a blue belt. Any gym that doesn't train any wrestling or judo is also bullshit. There is no martial art that will defend against multiple people. You’re talking about overcoming a limitation inherent in nature. It cannot be done. You can get lucky, play your cards well, and survival is certainly possible but there is no one martial art or sport which will teach you to reliably survive let alone thrive against multiple attackers. You guys need to just get this through your fucking heads already. All the boxing, jiu jitsu, wrestling judo, muay thai, whatever in the world is completely worthless when you get glassed in the face and sucker punched from behind.

BJJ is literally the one thing that everyone agrees on as being the most useful. There's a reason why every single MMA fighter always has trained it extensively. It is always BJJ + something else, because BJJ is the king when it comes to what to do when you are on the ground and you need to survive.

If I had to pick a second one to go with it I'd say the most solid combo would probably be BJJ + muay thai. Kickboxing and normal boxing are also solid choices. With these combos you'll have good defense while on your feet and good defense while on the ground.

gracies are a business, and their method got a lot of good publicity with wins in early MMA events.
boxing and wrestling are good because the quality of competitors in boxing and wrestling, at least in the US is very serious. if I was living in thailand I'd say do muay thai for the same reason, high quality competitors mean you'll absorb more experience and lore of 'shit that works'.
basically you can do anything, any martial art, just pick high quality serious people to train with.
its why gracie jujitsu and muay thai are both good and bad with popularity. there's a lot of serious training, but there's also a lot of 'pay the bills' unserious instruction because its popular.

Back before MMA most brawlers in the u.s. would get on top and punch you on the ground, it's very good for that. But still, it's a bit more of a gym mat or beach discipline, and not as useful against multiple attackers which things like Karate, (from before status seeking phoneis who didn't fight for real took it over) was much more useful. With it's strong emphasis on initiating/breaking contact, footwork and spacing. And yes Judo.

well you're Mexican. I imagine sanitary practices at your gym and of your rolling partners is terrible. This is why I recommend expensive gyms and only going till blue belt. Staph is no joke. You should absolutely learn boxing not just for punching but for leg movement and how to avoid hits. You also need to learn how to throw some basic kicks like roundhouse or a side kick, maybe even a front kick. Don't fall for those meme flashy spin moves or jump kicks because they're impractical. Then you will need to learn how to defend yourself from chokeholds and what to do when you are on the ground. Martial arts are a meme and you gotta learn that people who fight you in the real world don't follow the rules, so neither should you.

this, I don't want to get into street fights with karate fighters, you don't see a lot of them in gyms and sparring and they're overlooked by MMA because MMA sees itself as an evolution over karate as a sport, but there's a lot about their pacing tempo and speed that make them off-putting to fight. their striking and defense are good, they're good at deflecting strikes and returning their own, and their kicks are good and they practice them a lot, even if muay thai got favored for kicking in MMA, karate kicks are still very solid and dangerous.

Self Defence is cope

congrats you can beat your friend or your boyfriend on a mat with a referee and rules. Lmaoo

wont save you from a 6'5+ 250lb jacked black guy sucker punching you, or getting jumped by 5+ people like the couple in Cincinnati. Or other objects like bricks, chairs, knives, and bullets.

brazilian jiu jitsu is judo. they just called it jiu jitsu when they imported it to brazil. not that it isn't a good skill to have. judo or wrestling with some boxing are all you really need. maybe some good karate if you want to kick.

Ideal BJJ studio has hot white belt girls that come in through classpass or something. And a permissive culture that has no problem with, say, you taking back mount flattened out on these girls and just enjoying the position for a while. Otherwise I'd only bother taking a few fundamentals classes then moving on.

BJJ is currently undergoing a karate-style mcdojo craze, but the problem is that BJJ assumes everyone is playing by the rules like it’s a fair 1 vs 1 in the UFC but the truth is that the last place you want to be in a street fight is on the ground grappling with someone in a crowded bar with drunks and chairs and shit everywhere. Willingly taking someone down in a street fight and sacrificing your movement when your opponent could be potentially be armed or have friends is giga retarded. Your opponent is just going to smash a bottle into your face, bash your head against the concrete, bite, gouge eyes, grab your nuts and twist, pull a knife out and slide it into your ribs, or simply have his 2 other niglet friends boot you in the face and steal your wallet. I’ve been a bouncer for 5 years and here is what works - full Nelson, basic rear standing choke, movement/distance control, pepper spray, numbers (street fights are almost never truly 1v1) and get good at some basic boxing defense and counters. If you want to kick and be fancy, assume the floor is slippery and keep it to simple teeps or stomps to the knees. Knees to the body/groin. Elbows. Dirty boxing. Weapons, even a simple glass bottle. All of these are better options than taking a guy to the ground unless your plan is to just stall on the ground until the cops arrive/people break it up. As a “self defense martial art” BJJ is laughable and anyone that tries to convince you otherwise is a huckster selling you a class where you roll around with sweaty men making eachother say uncle and trying not to get a boner. I’m not going to say it’s truly useless, as any martial art in general is going to give you an advantage, but BJJ is almost useless in an actual self defense situation where your opponent wants to truly rob, hurt, cripple, or kill you. Always assume your opponent is stronger than you, willing to fight dirty, has friends in the crowd, and is armed.

There are three steps in a fight: 1. striking, 2. takedown, 3. ground.

BJJ trains you for the last step. But you can't reach that last step if you don't know any striking. A good boxer will knock you out before you even manage to grab him.

It doesn't mean BJJ is useless, but it's not enough on its own. You need good striking to be able to use BJJ in a fight.

Perfect answer.

Do some grappling, do some striking, lift weight, sparr regularly.
You’ll be fine
Anonymous (ID: bT2wsnwn) United States No.513347887
The reason jujitsu is as popular as it is, would be because 1) It does work and is legit
and 2) and this is a big one, you can be a regular dude who trains and still go to work the next day "fine". Of course the marketing is a big deal but for sure jujitsu is the easiest on the body among the legit combat sports. So you can actually run a business and pay the bills by having students who actually will pay their gym dues. If you tap early and dont go balls to the wall every round you can stay injury free for the most part and Bob the finance guy wont end up in the hospital and quit in the first month. Judo is hard on the body straight up. Boxing/kickboxing you are getting hit, now if you train at a good place you can mitigate that a lot by only going 30% but thats always walking on a tight rope. Old school muay thai doesnt even have you get out of the way of most strikes, you just deaden your nerves most of the time. Wrestling has you really exploding fucking hard for anyone on the same level/weight as you.

As for self defense, first get a gun. Second if you care about hand to hand, the answer will always be MMA. How you want to split that up into striking, grappling, submitting, power bombing someone on their fucking head all depends on the person, attributes, personality etc. You got a lot of options. How much is enough is kind of a rabbit hole. I would say dont train like you are counting down the days to summer vacation because then you will A) probably hate it and then B) rush too much and hurt yourself or someone else.

one of the best ways of getting into a healthy life.
I usually recommend my clients 3 ways of getting fit: Yoga, swimming(crawl) and BJJ.
For street fighting I'd probably go with Boxing and Judo, or Kali Shikaran/Eskrima/FMA for getting kills. BJJ only really works with rules but is the best way for the ADHD mind to get sucked into training, day one you are thrown in with the boys and start getting cardio while learning. BJJ is a great martial art but even better to get into shape.
Anonymous (ID: 4v/P4Yzm) United States No.513351140
I've trained BJJ for almost 15 years. 4 stripe brown because I've had to switch schools a few times. I train/teach at a really good school.

Generally training for self defense is retarded if your job doesn't require it but not knowing how to fight a little is pretty embarrassing for a man. If you are going to train it might as well be something provably decent and BJJ fits in there. Our school has great competition results but we also do basic self defense and training with striking is necessary for a blue belt. Find a place like that. Beyond that getting really good is about beating other people that are also really good and takes a ton of time and dedication. You have to really like it

Retard take
>>513339728
100% yes and don't follow that retard's advice. I've done both and the fact is you're not going to develop good hands doing muay thai or kickboxing because they're so goddamned focused on kicking that punches become nothing more than ways to set up kicks and generally kicking is a retarded thing to do in the street unless you have years upon years of experience since it compromises your balance so much. Meanwhile you can become a decent boxer after 1 yr of dedicated training, 6 months if you take it really seriously. Overall punching correctly is a far more useful skill for the average person as is learning the footwork, especially lateral footwork. You'd be amazed at how much people just tend freeze up if you move to the side in mid combo.
