There was was supposedly new leaked DNA information that the killer was in their 30s.
I unironically think that the hitman schizo theory might be true. I'm not sure if its popular in the US, but it has a decent amount of traction on japanese forums.
I don't think western media usually covers it, but it was way more difficult for someone to climb into the 2nd floor of their house than all of the "killer simply climbed into the son's room and strangled him first" theories perpetuate. There was a reenactment on japanese TV awhile ago, and it was a pretty involved feat to get in that way.
People on 5ch for a long time thought that the killer was a skateboarder that asked to use their bathroom, and had asked to use their bathroom in the past a bunch maybe, and was let in the house, killed the son, and when the father went up the stairs to check on what was taking so long was killed. The skateboarder idea is basically dead if the killer was in their 30s though.
A lot of people think that the father was the true murder target, and that the mother/daughter were killed in a more brutal, incel manner to mask the true intent (he stabbed the fuck out of them after killing them). There's schizo theories that the father was part of a church cult.
There is no way it was a robbery gone wrong. 0% chance. The guy climbs very difficulty into the second story, and instantly strangles the sleeping 6 year old son? The way the guy trashed the house was a clear masking of intent too, and he even left a fuckton of money that he sifted through. The way he slammed open drawers and went through shit was obviously not looking for anything and just making a scene.
The killer also unplugged the phoneline, which is an odd thing to do unless he was maybe the father knew him, let him in the house to do something, and he unplugged the phone at somepoint while talking to the father (to stop a 119 call) before walking up the stairs and strangling the son to death.
