The media is creating the false impression that a deal was made by the way they write these articles.

It's simple Russia has more meat for the meat grinder at least when compared to Ukraine. It's literally just a battle of attrition. It's been Russia's go to strategy since it was called "Prussia" and was being run by Czars. It hasn't failed them yet. Hell the only reason they lost control of the middle east in the 80s was due to a lack of commitment/interest in the region. If they had just zerged it like they usually do Iraq and Afghanistan would have been under Russian control during the 90s and 9/11 would have happened in Moscow or St. Petersburg instead of New York. With Ukraine its different it use to be part of Russia and Kiev even use to be its capital so there is a vested interest for Russia to get it back as much territory from Ukraine regardless of the costs in order to secure access to the Baltic sea and Crimea.
