The encroachment to internet freedom we've seen in the past 15 years has consistently been by the government.

The internet was killed by the government. They allowed it to exist, for the sake of getting info on foreign countries, and they're shutting down the open internet now that they have state-compliant, centralized internet that reveals all user's identities, such as Instagram or Facebook. They have no need for the old experimental internet and are starting to shut it down.
The companies that are suddenly "pro-censorship" are facing pressure from the Government, if not directly, through payment processors, which are being pressured by the banks, which are pressured by the world elites.
