Even in the early 70s when we traveled to see grandparents we took ham smammich and a jug of tea and drove right past the gleaming signs and stopped at a roadside picnic area and ate our smammiches. Granny would pack fried chicken from a chicken she just butchered that she raised herself, and fill canning jars with field peas and butter beans she grew and cooked and hot water cornbread for the trip home. I remember wanting a burger but I never needed a burger. It was too expensive. Even now when you go out you are close enough to your home to just wait and eat when you get back.
