I had to put it down myself in the moment. Didn't cry. Didn't cry when I told my wife and kids that the cat died. Cried softly in the shower by myself that night. Killed a coyote the next week, no clue if it was the same one but I like to think it was. I think that was the only time I've truly cried since I was a kid; that cat was my buddy.
My 6yo kid is super pumped about singing in a choir. Go to see his concert. He's positively beaming. Had to fight back tears of pride. Did not cry in the audience but definitely got choked up.

If I had cried in front of my wife and kids in either of those situations, I would find it to be unacceptable, but sometimes pride or grief will cause an emotional reaction. It's just important to be able to control that and release it at an appropriate time (read: alone).wtynt
