asteroids are a different story all together. Mostly because at formation they lacked the gravity well to force heavy metals down thousands of miles. Could be done autonomously. Still in the next 50 years it will certainly cost more than simply mining the resources on earth. Even if we take the lowest end starship cost estimates for launch weight, and come up with a cheap way to deorbit material from parachutes. It is the future because it holds vast resources but it isn't practical in our lifetimes. Best we could do right now is lay the groundwork. Manned missions of all sorts to study how to keep people alive in space. Maybe study requisite technologies on the ground on how to stay there long term. Unmanned missions to map, and try to extract resources in such a way we can at least understand potential hurdles and what directions to research further.

A proper space race would be great because it would convince people to dump resources into it Random pissing contests with flags on molehills mean nothing in themselves but if it spurs investment in the right direction I am all for it.

That said I hope china fails. That they get as close as possible but fail. So there is still incentive to dump money into beating them.

I also hope the artemis project fails similarly. Maybe a quick landing but then a shift of resources to starship or falcon heavy to do the same thing cheaper and more often. At least then we would work out refueling and lower cost to orbit. Artemis has nothing new technology-wise either to prove or develop in and of itself.
